Detecting glaucoma is child’s play at Geoff Steven and Sons in Hexham with our advanced imaging.

Geoff Steven and Sons Hexham have the most advanced comprehensive eye exam available in Northumberland. We recommend the whole family take advantage.

Due to our ongoing commitment to technological breakthrough and being leaders in clinical excellence we have the finest diagnostic equipment available to detect and monitor major eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Glaucoma is known as the thief of sight as it develops insidiously without any symptoms. Unfortunately most people will not know they have this disease until they begin to lose their sight. Glaucoma is caused by increased pressure in the eye, this increased pressure puts strain on the optic nerve and damages the very fine nerve layers within. A recent study from RNIB shows that the amount of structural loss to the nerve fibre thickness before loss of vision occurs is a massive 17%. Once this damage occurs and vision is lost, there is no way to restore your vision.

The very best chance of maintaining your vision is early detection and treatment and fortunately in addition to our comprehensive eye examination, we also have two pieces of equipment in our arsenal against sight loss.

OCT – Optical Coherence Tomography uses complex technology, similar to an MRI or CAT scan which can image in 3D and measure the layers of the retina. We can detect any abnormalities or damage which can lead to visual impairment or blindness if not detected and treated properly.

OPTOMAP Ultra-widefield retinal imaging captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image. Traditional methods only reveal 10 – 15% of your retina at any one time.  This unique ultrawide optomap view gives the ability to detect even the earliest signs of disease that appear on your retina.

Both tests are very simple and take just a few seconds and are completely non-contact, no sudden puffs of air etc. We can keep a record year on year and monitor any changes to your eyes over time. Early detection of any abnormalities means early diagnosis and early treatment which should halt further damage from occurring, maintaining your sight long into the future.

Advances in technology over the last 15 years have transformed eyecare with OCT and often OPTOMAP common within most hospitals. However only the most advanced optometry practices offer this technology. We have chosen to invest in this equipment to ensure that your eyesight is protected both now and in the future.

As Optometrists our main requirement is to detect eye disease. The RNIB estimate that “191,000 people were living with undetected Glaucoma.”
